Andrea Calì back to Auand Records with Take The Line
Riding on a train powered by traditional jazz
Italian pianist Andrea Calì trio, featuring Christian Pepe on double bass and Simone Sferruzza on drums, was not formed on the idea of playing standards. This is part of the challenge in Take The Line: a complete disclosure, on a path all the jazz greats have walked on.
This is why the Auand Piano Series newly released album accesses a route that catches a glimpse of past and present, through a tracklist made up of 4 originals and 3 standards penned by some of the most influential pianists of all times: Lennie Tristano (“Lennie’s Pennies”), Bill Evans (“Five”) and Chick Corea (“Matrix”). Three piano gods who were able to break any rule and go beyond their times.
As if the leader were trying to focus on a meeting point, original compositions share accuracy and a vintage-like setting, thus revealing an act of love towards the fathers of this music. In Andrea Calì’s words, «Take The Line is halfway between past and present – traditional jazz and new tracks blend to create a personal path: the album follows a line somehow, both in its performing approach and in the tracklist, and it sticks to it through both standards and originals.» In the exact track alternation, his aim arises from the start: the opening track “Why Are You Looking At Me” sounds as if you were hearing it through a Midtown club door sometime in the 50s.
Grown as a piano jazz prodigy, Sicilian musician Andrea Calì is now back to the Auand Family with his first project as a leader. His previous experience with the label run by Marco Valente includes Enter, the 2012 album recorded with Bologna-based act Bad Uok.
